Why screening and vetting is THE RIGHT THING TO DO.
When it comes to the safeguarding of children in institutions like schools, churches, ECD’s, creches, sports clubs, etc., we know that there are several protocols that need to be in place.
Having an up-to-date child safeguarding policy is a good place to start. Appointing the right staff and volunteers is important including performing their background and reference checking. The appointment of designated safeguarding leaders is another key safeguarding initiative. Proper and regular training on child safeguarding protocols is imperative.
But, having been a biometrics officer for the last 8 years, I have come to value the screening and vetting of the staff and volunteers against the National Register for Sex Offenders and National Child Protection Register because of it’s advantages and direct benefits.
1. Firstly, it’s the right thing to do. You add to your credibility as an institution that you hold the children in your care in high esteem especially with regard to their safety.
2. Then, by screening everybody appropriately, you are compliant with the law and avoid possible prosecution.
3. Screening and vetting also prevents the wrong people coming into contact with the children in your care. Would you employ a person whose name is on the Sex Offenders Register? How would you know if you are not screening anybody?
4. Screening ensures the integrity of the organization remains intact. You become an institution into which parents and the community can safely place their trust.
5. And now we come to some of the main reasons why I feel there are benefits and advantages to screening – and the first is the fact that screening and vetting causes perpetrators and wannabe perpetrators (including those whose names are (not yet) on any of the registers) to feel uncomfortable and nervous in that environment and this exercise may eventually cause them to move on – which is exactly what you want to see happening! So, appropriate vetting and screening can act as a deterrent!
6. Lastly, it provides peace of mind to the management, the staff, the parents as well as the children – which is the ultimate aim of appropriate child safeguarding.

Regular vetting and screening may not contribute directly to your programmes or daily activities, but it will certainly keep the safeguarding of the children as a priority in the minds and hearts of everybody.
