THE HANDLING OF CLEARANCE RESULTS
Chapter 6 of the Sexual Offenders Amendment Act requires
that employers must ensure their staff and volunteers, who work with children, are
appropriately screened against the National Register for Sex Offenders (NRSO).
On application for this clearance for the employees and
volunteers, the employer will be issued with a clearance certificate for each of the
screened applicants.
Because the personal information contained on the
clearance certificate is confidential and is protected by the POPI Act and other pieces
of legislation, utmost care must be taken to store these documents in a safe place not
accessible to anybody except the person designated by the management to do so. This person will make these documents available in the event of an
official enquiry by a legal representative, as proof of the organisation’s compliance
with the law, or, in the case of having to discuss and address a particular employee’s
suitability to work with children in that organisation.
Child Protection Screening will be sending the final
certificates to this designated person on receipt from the relevant Government
Departments. Individual employees or volunteers must also only approach this designated
person for copies of their certificates, as needed.
